Artist in Residence

Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design offers state-of-the-art studio space for new and emerging craftspeople to practice their creative skills. Our clay, metal, glass and weaving studios offer a great space for artisans to work on their craft.

While living in the Sydney community, the artists have access to studio space for their art practice. At the same time, they'll hold art classes and workshops and host public lectures and special exhibitions for the members of the community.

Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design welcomes Sarah MacLeod as she begins her residency at the Centre as part of Nova Scotia College for Art and Design University’s (NSCAD University) Community Studio Residency Program.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1993, Sarah MacLeod received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from NSCAD University. She has exhibited work throughout Canada and the United States and her work is in various public and private collections including the NSCAD University Archives, the Maryland Institute College of Art, and the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts.

Her current practice is founded in using video projection and installation in conjunction with traditional and experimental textile work and soft-sculpture. Thematically, Sarah’s work critically examines the aesthetics of girlish childhood nostalgia while deconstructing darker underlying themes of chronic/mental illness, familial relationships and how these concerns shape identity.
