Hardy was born and brought up in in East Germany. His family escaped to Canada, arriving in Halifax at Pier 21 in 1958. As a child, Hardy watched his dad in the blacksmith shop, developing his affinity for metal work. Hardy graduated from NSCAD in 1973. His major was jewellery and he was taught by Orland Larson and Christian Gaudernak. Now retired from teaching art in the school system, Hardy is working on a number of artistic endeavors including jewellery. The chains are Byzantine in their basic design with changes and embellishments done to enhance the design.
