Introduction to Jewellery
Date: January 21 – March 11, 2021 (Thursdays, 8 weeks)
Time: 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm

This course will introduce a broad range of jewellery making techniques targeted at beginners with little to no metalsmithing experience.

Classes will cover sawing, soldering, texturing, and polishing techniques, as well as methods of assembling final pieces of jewellery. Students will have the opportunity to bring their own unique designs to life with the guidance and supervision of the instructor.

Tuition fees include the use of all tools and equipment. Students will be required to purchase a basic kit of materials needed for the course for $30. Any additional materials required will be available for purchase during class.

Aleena Derohanian is a jewellery artist from Toronto, Ontario. She has trained at OCAD University, in the Material Art and Design program. Her jewellery work is inspired by post-modern maximalism, and she uses a wide range of non-metallic materials in her work. She is currently working at the Centre as an artist in residence.

Class outline:

Week One: Welcome! Intro to the studio & Safety tour
Demo: Saw piercing
Demo: Using the drill press
Demo: Filing metal using needle files

Work Time: Students will practice sawing out shapes from sheet brass metal using templates provided by the instructor. The intention of these cut outs are to be later turned into either earrings, a ring, or a pendant, depending on what the student wishes to make.

Week Two: Making Ring Bands
Demo: Measuring fingers and using the ring blank formula
Demo: Sawing, filing, and shaping a band ring
Demo: Soldering a ring band
Demo: Shaping a ring

Work Time: Scattered throughout the four demos of today, students will follow along and create a ring band using the 2 mm round sterling silver wire in their kits

Week Three: Unnamed Class (A Smorgasbord of Lessons)
Demo: Using Emery sticks to clean up the ring band
Demo: Using the tumbler
Demo: Creating jump rings using the 1 mm round wire in the kit
Demo: Create earring wires using the 0.8 mm round wire in the kit

Work Time: Students will use the time in class to practice the techniques covered in class today

Week Four: All Things Circles
Demo: Disc Cutter
Demo: Annealing
Demo: Dapping set

Work Time:At this point in the course, students will have been introduced to a basic range of tools and techniques to make some simple jewellery pieces. Students will have the freedom to continue creating the pieces that they have already started working on or can begin consulting with the instructor on how to create their own designs.

Week Five: Textures
Demo: Using the hart and ball burs to create textures
Demo: Using hammers to create textures
Demo: Darkening silver using liver of sulfur

Work Time: Students will continue to work on their own pieces, while the instructor is available for questions and support

Week Six: Polishing
Demo: Using the polishing machine

Work Time: Students will continue to work on their own pieces, while the instructor is available for questions and support

Week Seven: Work Period
Students will continue to work on their own pieces, while the instructor is available for questions and support

Week Eight: Work Period
Students will continue to work on their own pieces, while the instructor is available for questions and support

Final course kit includes: 

  • 2 pieces of 2″ square 1 mm brass sheet, $3
    • 1 piece of 70 mm long 2 mm round sterling silver wire, $3
    • 1 piece of 200 mm long 0.8 mm round sterling silver wire, $3
    • 1 piece of 200 mm long 1 mm round sterling silver wire, $3
    • ½ square inch of hard solder, $3
    • ½ square inch of medium solder, $3
    • 1 dozen saw blades, $5
    • 3 small containers, $3
    • 1 piece of beeswax, $3
    • 1 piece of scouring pad, $1
