Learn the fundamentals of carving while completing a Black-Capped Chickadee. The course will cover the basics of using and sharpening knives, using drawings to layout a carving and how to carve feathers, burning in detail and finishing adding eyes and legs. Maximum number of students is 12.

Course Outline:
You will learn how to layout your carving working from a paper pattern to block of wood, and then through the following steps:

Class One: Familiarizing yourself with the basic tools of wood carving and understanding the layout of feathers on a typical bird. Starting with a basswood cut-out of the Chickadee you will setup your initial cuts and proceed to define the bird.

Class Two: With the Chickadee now rounded and starting to look like the actual bird you will draw on the feather groups and begin carving them. You will learn basic knife sharpening techniques.

Class Three:  We continue refining the feather groups and locating the position of the eyes.  You will learn how to install the eyes.

Class Four:  We complete the detail carving of the feathers and learn how to locate and mount the legs.  A demonstration of burning techniques to further refine feather detail is given and the legs are installed on your Chickadee.  Painting instructions will also be supplied.

You will need to bring:
To carve safely you need a cut-proof glove for the hand you will use to hold your carving (you will find level 5 cut resistant gloves on Amazon, at Canadian Tire and Home Depot) You will also need a good carver’s knife such as a Flexcut knife from Lee Valley Tools.   You can also use an X-acto style knife.  Don’t rush to buy more than one good all-purpose cutting or detail knife.  Also bring a pencil, ruler and a quality eraser.
