Youth Block Printing – Ages 7 to 12 years (Introductory)
Date: September 20 – November 8, 2023 (Wednesdays, 8 weeks)
Time: 4:30 pm to 6 pm

This 8-week class offers an introduction to block printing. This class is directed toward youth who are interested in making their own stamps. Students will print hand-carved images on paper and fabric. Youth are invited to explore inspiring Block Printing techniques with various unique applications.

Unit 1: Print Tools and Safety
This unit explores the tools used to carve and create block prints. Students will learn safe material handling and how to handle carving tools. Students will engage with inking materials, brayers, carving tools, and rubber blocks.

Unit 2: Sketching and Orientation
This unit explores positive and negative space. Students will learn how to sketch for print and plan for a print project. Students will learn techniques for working with flipped images that are printed in reverse. This unit also explores text and how to flip text for print.

Unit 3: Block carving
This unit will offer students the time and space to carve their blocks for print. Blocks will be carved for paper prints and fabric print purposes. Students will review safe material handling.

Unit 4: Block Printing
Rainbow rolls, mono-prints, and editions. Students will print their carved blocks using various printmaking techniques. This unit covers basic printmaking terminology. Students will learn how to sign editions, print on paper, and make their own printed t-shirt.

Material List:
A sketchbook or sketching paper
Pencil or other drawing tools Paper towel
Sharpie markers
Plain non-graphic cotton or cotton blend T-shirt, shorts, hat
(Note: students may print on fabric squares that can be sewn on later)
