Call for Expression of Interest: Knitters

Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design is seeking skilled knitters for a Cape Breton inspired Wool Sweater Project. This hand knit Cape Breton sweater is a textured style and reflects the history and culture of Cape Breton Island. This project is inspired by the two sweater projects developed in the late 1970s and early 80s; the Cape Breton Development Corporation (DEVCO) commissioned three sweaters based on Mi’kmaq, Gaelic, and Acadian cultures; and the four county sweater designs commissioned by Cape Breton Woollen Mills (Irish Cove). 

We are committed to keeping this project local, from the concept to completion. This includes engaging with local sheep farmers, spinners, knitters and designers.  

We welcome applications from individuals who can contribute their knitting expertise to this meaningful project celebrating Cape Breton’s textile heritage.

Deadline for Submission: May 1, 2026

Project Timeline: Knitting work will take place from Spring 2026 to Fall 2026.
