Ground Rules 2019 Residency – Cape Breton Centre for Craft

Ground Rules 2019 Residency

Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design presented Ground Rules 2019, a new experiential learning residency program in Cape Breton Highlands National Park in partnership with Parks Canada. The 2019 residency program is designed to give 14 Nova Scotian artists with diverse backgrounds five days to explore their culture, new perspectives and dive into the unexpected from June 9 to 14, 2019. Artists have the chance to play with new ideas as they experience the natural landscapes of Nova Scotia and are stimulated by scientific processes that shape and change the natural world. Scientists, park interpreters, and creative leaders interacted with artists to educate and inspire. Overall, the five-day residency will promote the cross-pollination of ideas as artists spend time with each other, scientists, interpreters, and creative leaders. The artists also spend time alone breathing in and pondering the nature that surrounds them and how it connects to their individual heritage and creative process.

The residency program is linked to an exhibition, which will feature new work created by the participating artists as a result of their residency schedule in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. No work was required to be produced on-site during the residency portion of the program. Rather, the aim of the residency is to serve as a pause from everyday life and to give artists time to be inspired and explore new ideas and ways of working. Artists will have until early February 2020 to develop and create work in their own studios. Artwork will then be submitted to the curator for consideration in the resulting exhibition at the Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design in Sydney, NS, and then travel to St. Mary’s University Art Gallery in September 2020.
