In this workshop, you will learn to dye cotton with plant derived indigo. Indigo is a blue dye that has been used for over 6000 years. This workshop will focus on the unique and diverse art of Shibori, originating from Japan.

Under the guidance of a trained shibori textile artist, you will learn about different ways of manipulating the cloth to create patterns once it is dyed. Students will learn about stitched resists, tied resists, and woodblock clamped resists. Finished items available for pick up their items three days after the workshop.

This eight-week beginner wheel throwing class is focused on building simple skills to create and finish functional work on the wheel. The smaller class size allows for a more focused, customised-to-you learning experience while allowing room for exploration.

This eight-week beginner’s wheel throwing class is designed for those who have never worked with clay before. The course touches on the entire spectrum of basic techniques necessary for a potter to create their work from start to finish. This class will focus on building simple skills to create and finish cups, mugs, and bowls on the wheel. The smaller class size allows for a more focused, customised-to-you learning experience while allowing room for exploration. SPOOKTACULAR CLAY FUN (INTRODUCTORY LEVEL)

Create and paint a Halloween – themed tea light and three miniature monsters in this fun two hour workshop! Completed work can be picked up from Customs House one week after class.

In this Hallowe’en-inspired evening of fun, you and your friends are invited to form and paint your very own spooky tealight and small monsters! Each person has a chance to make one tealight and three miniature creatures, as well as paint them using ceramic slips. All pieces will be fired and finished with a clear glaze after class. Completed work and complimentary tealight will be available for pickup at Customs House one week after class. (8 spots available)

Learn to transform flat slabs of clay into one of a kind, beautiful mugs! This easy and fun workshop will teach you how to use slabs to make a beautiful custom mug for yourself using a template! Try your hand at clay forming techniques, and make something that you will use every day, and memories that will last forever.

Although textures will be available in class, please feel free to bring textures (leaves, doileys, etc) if you have a special thing that you wanted to impress into the clay, so you can make it your own unique design. (8 spots available)

This class offers a fascinating introduction to the unusual technique of using rust to create dyes. Students will work with silk and rusty objects to create beautiful pieces out of simple materials.

BASIC BLOCK PRINTING

Learn how to create your own original carved designs in linoleum blocks. Then, learn how to transfer these onto cotton pillow covers, to have a completely unique item for your home. Learn the secret to creating seamless repeats: straight repeats, flipped repeats, and 360 degree repeats. ADVANCED BLOCK PRINTING WITH NATURAL PLANT DYES

In this class you will learn to directly stamp colour onto silk. Explore carving your own linoleum blocks with your original designs. This class will teach you the unique art of using plant proteins as thickeners to stamp with natural plant dyes.

The instructor will give a brief history of this art and how it is used around the world. You will create a unique and modern looking pillow cover from these ancient techniques. Students can pick up their items approximately 2 days after the workshop.

HAND PAINTING ON SILK WITH PLANT DYES

Free your inner artist and become a silk painter! You will be shown both traditional patterns you can paint use to paint on silk, or go rogue and paint your own expressions on pure silk scarves.

The instructor will teach you the process of creating a special formula of vegetable matter to thicken natural dyes that make them ideal for direct application on silk. Students will learn about various silk painting styles from around the world, and will be provided with materials to create their own designs. Finished items available for pick up approximately 2 days after the workshop.

UPCYCLING SOCIAL – INDIGO DYEING

Learn to reduce, reuse and reinvent what you have! Find a way to love your old items again, and get creative in the process. If you have old clothing or home items that you don’t use much anymore, bring them to our workshop to give them a new life.

Each student will receive a handout providing background information on common indigo dyeing techniques. Then, under the instruction of a trained textile artist, they will receive one-on-one consultation on how to execute their vision for their item. Collaboration is encouraged, and students are encouraged to share ideas.

Please bring a light coloured item, to ensure that the indigo can colour it. Make sure the garment is a natural fibre. It must be majority cotton, linen, silk or rayon (which includes Tencel, Modal, or Cupro.) Polyester or Nylon items will not dye in natural indigo. If you need help determining this, contact the instructor at info@eternatextiles.com. (You are welcomed to bring a pot luck item to share!)
