Come along and learn how to make a splint woven basket with a wooden handle suitable for shopping, gathering or storage. Using reed, you will be shown traditional weaves and techniques involved in splint work by experienced weaver Sian Turner.

Sian Turner has been weaving baskets since she was 17 and over the years has learned from some of the best European professional basket makers. She works in willow, birch bark, black ash, reed, pine needles and commercial reed. Sian has taught beginner basketry for about ten years at various community centres, private homes and retreats.  She sells her products in stores and markets and really enjoys sharing what she knows about the materials and the methods.

Sian retired 8 years ago and since then has been focusing on her weaving. She grows her own willow and harvest birch bark, willow bark, pine needles and sparingly uses black ash.  She sells her work at farmer’s markets (Antigonish and Mabou), some stores (Sunset Gallery and the I.C.C.A. Gift store) and now does commissions and repairs from her home. She is planning to open a small basket shop on their property outside of Antigonish.
