Mel Sweetnam is an ecological fibre artist working with organic, sustainable materials and processes at her studio in Goose Cove. Her particular area of expertise is making organic mordants and dyes from plants she grows herself, which she uses to create one-of-a-kind surface designs on fabric and paper. She is a juried member of the Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design, the South Haven Guild of Weavers, Spinners, and Dyers, and the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild.

Material Fee Included:
Covers watercolour and dry medium papers, card stock, mordants and assists, botanical dyes and plant materials, and yarn/thread for bookbinding)

Students will learn:
– different methods to prepare paper for natural dyes, how to choose and prepare plants for contact printing, and how to finish your one-of-a-kind printed paper to best preserve/protect it;

– how to create a range of samples, some for use during the workshop, and others to take home as inspiration, use in other crafts, etc; and

– how to make beautiful book covers, to prepare signatures (the groups of papers inside the book), how to hand-wax thread and to use the 2,000 year old Coptic stitch method to securely hand-bind a one-of-a-kind artisanal book to take home.
