This is a course for absolute beginners in jewellery, and who are interested in learning how to make their own sterling silver band rings in a variety of sizes and textures. We will be covering basic jewellery techniques: sawing, soldering, adding textures to the metal, and polishing. Students will also learn how to accurately measure finger sizes and make the accurately sized rings for their fingers.

All tools and equipment needed to complete this course are provided by the Centre, and are covered in the tuition fee. However, students will be required to purchase their own sterling silver materials, which is available for purchase during class time at the Centre.

(Approximately $20 for sterling silver, but exact costs will vary depending on what the student makes.)

Aleena Derohanian is an undergraduate student studying jewellery design and silversmithing at OCAD University, in Toronto, Ontario. Her jewellery style is inspired by post-modern maximalist interior design, embracing thematic influences from the realms of pop culture, nostalgia, and psychedelia.

Aleena’s work is a combination of traditional silversmithing techniques and avant-garde approaches to material explorations framed in a contemporary, art-jewellery practice. She strives to create a balance between metallic and non-metallic elements in her pieces, working against the implied hierarchy of materials in jewellery that places precious metals at the top.

In the past, she was a summer resident at Harbourfront Centre for Craft and Design, Toronto; been the recipient of the Lily Maley Scholarship; and have had her work exhibited throughout Canada, and online exhibitions from galleries across the US and Europe (online due to COVID-19).

Advanced registration for members begins January 4. General registration for non members begins January 11.
