Explore Colour, Shape and Composition Through Screen and Stencil Printing with Wynn Toronitz

Students will create, compose and reproduce a physical work, and create an edition of 5-10 original copies over the course of one or two days.

Students will explore theory and ideas relating to composing shapes, colours and linework in interesting and effective ways. Students will use both stencil/sponge printing and screen printing mediums to create their work. They will discuss production work and how to compose artwork for the purpose of reproduction.

The screen printing process will be introduced, from the initial drawing, to the digitally produced transparency, to the final printing process. Students will stick to one or two colour screen printing, and discuss its further potential.

Wynn Toronitz is a Canadian artist born in British Columbia, who works around the country with the Canadian Coast Guard and currently spends most of his time on Canada’s East Coast. He uses abstract and concrete imagery to bring a playfully skewed perspective to the depiction of otherwise ordinary subjects, with a special focus on the human form.

Using pen, watercolour, printmaking, and tattooing, he creates visually succinct works, sometimes incorporating text, which often explores the absurdity that lies just beneath the surface of our carefully rationalized existence.
