Drypoint etching is a 600-year-old method of making prints, practiced by artists such as Rembrandt, Dürer, and Canada’s David Milne. The Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design provides the specialized roller press needed to produce elegant original prints in multiple editions. The process involves direct engraving on copper, zinc, aluminum, and plexiglas plates, without the use of acid etching.

This class guides you through plate preparation, drawing, inking and de-inking, paper selection, and printing multiple editions of your own original work. Even beginners can confidently engage with this art form, as the learning curve is designed to be approachable, challenging, and enjoyable.

Onni Nordman is a painter from Unama’ki-Cape Breton whose home and studio are on the cliffs of South Bar. His work has been acknowledged by Creative Nova Scotia and the Canada Council for the Arts. He was named Visual Artist of 2015 by Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design. Onni’s work is unique, innovative, and decidedly contemporary. Onni also studied printmaking at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design for four years with master printers Robert Rogers and Edward Porter.
