Keeping the heritage skill of handweaving alive means preserving not only a craft technique, but also the cultural knowledge, creativity, and traditions passed from one generation to the next.
During this eight-week program, students will learn about fibres that are suitable for weaving projects and gain hands-on experience with the weaving process. Students will learn how to dress a floor loom, follow a weaving draft, and understand the essential steps involved in weaving and finishing textiles once they are removed from the loom. Through this step-by-step approach, students will develop both the technical skills and creative confidence needed to produce their own woven work.
As students gain a deeper understanding of the skill, patience, and artistry involved in handweaving, they also develop a broader appreciation for handmade textiles in an age of mass production. This program helps inspire a new generation of makers who appreciate the importance of sustainability, craftsmanship, and the continued vitality of the textile arts.
Diane Campbell has been weaving since 1990 when she began learning from mentor and friend Patricia McClelland. Diane has a great appreciation for fine craft and textiles in particular. She has tried her hand at hooked rugs, quilt making, felting and more but it is the call of the loom that continually draws her back to weaving. Diane enjoys creating a wide variety of handwovens – from household linens to tartan throws, rugs and overshot coverlets.
