Basic Sewing “Sewing is Fun” (Introductory to Intermediate Level)
Date: May 4 – June 1, 2026 (Mondays, 4 weeks)

This four-week course introduces beginners to the fundamentals of sewing. Students will learn how to operate a sewing machine, understand basic fabric types, and develop essential sewing skills while completing a simple tote bag project.

Dianne Wadden holds BSc in Home Economics and Med in Counselling. She is an experienced sewing instructor who taught at the junior high level and served as a volunteer sewing instructor for 10 years with the HERS (Hands Earning Respect for Self) program for women.

Course topics include:
Sewing machine basics: threading the needle and bobbin, changing needles, and basic maintenance
Fabric fundamentals (grainlines, woven vs. knits)
Reading commercial patterns
Cutting techniques
Basic stitching methods
Completion of a small project (tote bag)

Students can bring their own sewing machine (with its manual) or use one of the machines provided. Limited number of machines available. (No class May 18)

Materials Required:
75 cm (30 inches) fabric for outer portion and straps
50 cm (20 inches) fabric for contrast
Thread
Straight pins
Scissors
Seam ripper
