Time: 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Join our 8 weeks course by Harpreet Kaur and discover the classic craft of embroidery and create works of art one stitch at a time.

Embroidery is the art of decorating fabric with needle and thread, creating designs, patterns or images.
Materials Fee not included. (No class October 13)

Week One: Introduction to Embroidery

  • History and cultural significance of embroidery
  • Overview of materials: fabrics, hoops, threads, needles, scissors
  • How to prepare fabric and use an embroidery hoop
  • Learning to thread a needle and tie basic knots
  • Practice: Simple running stitch

Week Two: Basic Stitches – Part 1

  • Review of Week 1.
  • Learn and practice:
  • Backstitch
  • Split stitch
  • Stem stitch
  • Small sampler practice on cotton fabric

Week 3: Basic Stitches – Part 2

  • Learn and practice:
    • Satin stitch
    • Chain stitch
    • French knots
    • Lazy daisy (detached chain stitch)
  • Create a small floral motif using the learned stitches

Week 4: Patterns & Design Transfer

  • Methods for transferring designs (tracing, water-soluble pens, carbon paper)
  • Introduction to simple patterns
  • Start a small sampler with 3-4 design elements

Week 5: Working with Colour & Texture

  • Colour selection basics (contrast, shading)
  • Layering stitches for texture
  • Practice blending colours with thread
  • Continue sampler project

Week 6: Small Project – Embroidered Hoop Art

  • Start a guided project: small floral or monogram hoop design
  • Apply previously learned stitches and techniques
  • Tips on finishing hoop art (backing & neat finishes)

Week 7: Customizing Clothing & Household Items

  • Techniques for embroidering on clothes (shirts, denim) and home décor (napkins, pillowcases)
  • Practice on a small fabric swatch or bring a personal item
  • Discuss care and washing of embroidered items

Week 8: Final Project & Showcase

  • Complete a final piece: students choose a small project (hoop art, mini sampler, or a custom design)
  • Review all stitches and techniques learned
  • Display of students’ works and Q&A session

Harpreet Kaur is a Creative and passionate Fashion Designer with a Bachelor of Science (hons) in Fashion Designing and strong ability in traditional textiles, garment construction, and craft documentation. Looking to contribute to the vibrant craft and fashion industry of Cape Breton Island through sustainable, community-driven design.
