Join Emily to learn about the basic tools required to make jewellery. This class is designed to help you become comfortable with each tool by name, feel and use. You’ll leave the class with a wearable piece and the confidence to create more.

You will be introduced to basic jewellery techniques like sawing, texturing metal, drilling, polishing, finishing and designing! Tools and initial supplies to complete a small design will be provided.

Other Materials required:
a sketchbook
pencil
safety glasses (if you have them)
an N95 rated mask for dust and particles, and of course some inspiration!

Material Fee Includes:
1 dozen saw blades
small piece of beeswax
piece of easy solder
piece of medium solder
2 feet of 20-gauge wire
2 feet of 14-gauge wire
1 foot of 16-gauge wire
one strip of 20-gauge sheet (10mm by 8mm)

*Students are expected to attend the first two classes as the instructor covers safety and proper use of tools. If you are unable to attend one of these classes, it is possible to book a private lesson with her at your cost.

Emily Dickinson is a local goldsmith who works at Inglis Jewellers in downtown Sydney. She studied in New Brunswick at The College of Craft and Design as well as The University of New Brunswick where she obtained her Applied Arts Degree. When she isn’t in the studio playing with gold and diamonds, she can be found cutting stones, rockhounding, gold panning, and doing generally anything that helps better her skills. Emily generally prefers repair work as she loves the challenge of fixing broken jewellery as well as the lack of paperwork, but also finds time for a few projects here and there in her spare time. She is still pretty new to Cape Breton but hopes to provide more classes in the future!
