Thrummed Mittens (Intermediate Level)

Learn how to knit pillowy soft loops of fleece into your knitting, dotting the outside of the mitten with dainty hearts, while creating a gloriously warm lining on the inside. Come and make colourful warm mittens with Fleece Artist Wonder Woolens hand dyed yarn and roving. Students will need already need to know how to knit on four needles. (no class May 19)
Originally from Northern Ontario Alison has been thrumming mittens, socks, and hats for creating warm winter wear, for nearly 20 years. In this class you will learn the basics of material choices, thrum preparation, how to knit thrums into your project, finishing techniques.
Alison has taught knitting at Micheals, local yarn stores, community groups, and facilitated a variety of workshops She has also been part of a team that hosts yearly knitting retreats. She knit garments to be photographed for Sugar Bush Yarns pattern books. She has studied the role of knitting in communication, spirituality, and culture giving papers on the various roles of knitting at international academic conferences in Canada, Australia, Mexico, Finland, and England.
Materials required:
Large eyed darning needle
Sharp scissors
2 sets of 4mm double pointed needles
Stitch markers
Measuring tape
Thrummed Mitten kit ($25 payable to the instructor)
Week One: Getting Started
Introductions, (share what you feel comfortable to) and choose our kits. Learn about what materials are used in the thrumming process, and how to prepare thrums properly. You will practice thrumming using yarn and fleece provided by instructor, then read the pattern and cast on our mitten.
Week Two:
You will share our progress and tales of our knitting adventures, then correct any mishaps or mistakes. We will begin the thumb gusset, exploring various increase options, and continue knitting our mittens.
Week Three:
You will celebrate our weeks knitting accomplishments, then discuss shaping techniques as well as invisible thrumming. We will then pick up the thumb stiches and complete our thumbs. Finally, we will explore finishing techniques for this type of knitting.
