Learn the Art of Hand Stitching (Introductory Level)

This hands-on 8-week stitching class is perfect for beginners and those looking to refine their skills. Each week, you will dive into different stitching techniques, tools, and projects, helping you develop a solid foundation in hand embroidery and stitching. By the end of the course, you will have the confidence and skills to create beautiful, custom-made pieces.
Materials Required:
Fabric
Needles
Threads, and a hoop
Week 1: Introduction to Hand Stitching +Basic Stiches
- How to thread your needle and tie knots
- Introduction to fabric types and choosing the right fabric for stitching
- Basic stitches: Running Stitch, Back Stitch, and Whip Stitch
- Simple practice project to get comfortable with basic stitching techniques
- Create a sample fabric swatch with different stitches
Week 2: Exploring Decorative Stitches
- How to use decorative threads and specialty needles
- Stitches to enhance your designs: Satin Stitch, French Knots, and Lazy Daisy
- When and where to use these stitches in design
- Create a small floral design using the new stitches
Week 3: Introduction to Pattern Transfers
- Different methods of transferring designs (pencil, tracing paper, water-soluble markers)
- How to prepare fabric and mark designs clearly
- How to stitch within a marked design
- Create a small stitched monogram or initials using transferred design
Week 4: Working with Color and Texture
- Choosing color palettes for stitching
- Playing with thread thickness, textures, and fabric variations
- Techniques for creating dimension: French knots, Bullion knots, and Embellishment with beads
- Stitched pattern incorporating color gradients and textured elements
Week 5: Working on a Stitching Sampler
- How to plan a project with multiple techniques
- How to combine stitches to form a cohesive design
- How to space stitches effectively on fabric
- Start your stitching sampler with a variety of stitches and design elements
Week 6: Introduction to Embroidery Hoops + Mounting Your Work
- How to properly use and adjust embroidery hoops for different sizes of fabric
- How to finish edges neatly (including framing or trimming)
- Mounting your work for display or sewing into a project
- Embroider a small design onto fabric in a hoop, and practice mounting
Week 7: Advanced Techniques: Applique and Shadow Work
- Introduction to appliqué: hand-sewing shapes and fabrics onto your base fabric
- Shadow work technique (stitching to create a “shadow” effect with delicate threads)
- Combining techniques for creative designs
- Small appliqué design (like a flower or animal shape) with shadow stitch accents
Week 8: Final Project + Finishing Techniques
- Tips on project planning and finishing techniques (e.g., ironing, framing, and mounting)
- How to make a final piece polished and professional
- Final review of techniques learned throughout the course
- Final stitched project (e.g., personalized embroidery, decorative item like a cushion, or wall hanging)
