Know how to knit and purl but don’t know how to read a pattern?  Find choosing your materials stressful? Come on out and learn now to work your way from Pattern and yarn choice through to basic finishing techniques.

Students will learn to navigate the world of knitting language, variety of yarn weights, textile properties, common knitting instructions, and finishing techniques. You will also explore tips and tricks for yarn substitution, tension swatches and other simple tips to make knitting more fun.

***Must already know how to cast on, knit and purl on two needles***

Materials Required:
Patterns that interest you (if you have any)
Yarns you love but don’t know what to do with (if you have any)
1 set 4mm straight knitting needles
100 grams of worsted weight yarn
Large eyed darning needle
Stitch markers
Scissors, measuring tape
Notebook and pencil

Alison Hood originally from Ontario Alison Hood, moved to Cape Breton with her family in 2023. Alison has over 35 years of knitting, and professional teaching experience. Alison’s passion for knitting and all things fiber is infectious, and she creates a fun, informative learning environment, filled with engaging stories, helpful tips, and just the right amount of detail to keep things interesting without overwhelming her students.

Alison has taught knitting at Micheals, local yarn stores, community groups, and facilitated a variety of workshops She has also been part of a team that hosts yearly knitting retreats. She knit garments to be photographed for Sugar Bush Yarns pattern books. She has studied the role of knitting in communication, spirituality, and culture giving papers on the various roles of knitting at international academic conferences in Canada, Australia, Mexico, Finland, and England.
