Learn how to Thrum (Introductory Level)
Date: February 24 – March 3, 2026 (Tuesdays, 2 weeks)
Time: 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm

Come and learn the basics of choosing your materials for a thrumming project, how to prepare your thrums,  and three ways in which to insert them into your knitting. You will explore the variety of materials to use as thrums and how to properly prepare them to be used in their projects.

You will also learn the 3 main ways of inserting thrums into their work securely as well as which to use depending on the project. You will also discuss what yarns can and cannot be used for thrumming projects, and how you can alter a pattern to include thrums.

Students must already know how to knit on two needles and in the round on four needles, circular needle, or magic loop.

Materials Required:
1 set 4mm double pointed needles (or preferred needles for knitting in the round) and 1 set 4mm straight needles
50-100 grams of 100% wool worsted weight (NOT superwash wool)
Large eyed darning needle
Scissors
Notebook and pencil
Thrumming for practice will be provided by the instructor for 10$

Alison Hood originally from Ontario Alison Hood, moved to Cape Breton with her family in 2023. Alison has over 35 years of knitting, and professional teaching experience. Alison’s passion for knitting and all things fiber is infectious, and she creates a fun, informative learning environment, filled with engaging stories, helpful tips, and just the right amount of detail to keep things interesting without overwhelming her students.

Alison has taught knitting at Micheals, local yarn stores, community groups, and facilitated a variety of workshops She has also been part of a team that hosts yearly knitting retreats. She knit garments to be photographed for Sugar Bush Yarns pattern books. She has studied the role of knitting in communication, spirituality, and culture giving papers on the various roles of knitting at international academic conferences in Canada, Australia, Mexico, Finland, and England.
