Retro Checkered Slippers (Intermediate Level)
Date: March 2 – March 23, 2026 (Mondays, 4 weeks)

Level of difficulty: Must already know how to cast on, knit, and purl on two needles
Bring back memories as you knit a pair of puff check slippers, not out of your grandma’s phentex, but with comfy chunky weight yarn.
Students will learn to knit an upgraded version of the classic puff check slipper.
Materials Required:
1 set 5mm straight needles
100 grams (minimum) each of two colours of chunky weight yarn such as Bernat Softee chunky (look for a 5 or the words chunky of the ball band)
Large eyed darning needle
Scissors
Note book and pencil
Alison Hood originally from Ontario Alison Hood, moved to Cape Breton with her family in 2023. Alison has over 35 years of knitting, and professional teaching experience. Alison’s passion for knitting and all things fiber is infectious, and she creates a fun, informative learning environment, filled with engaging stories, helpful tips, and just the right amount of detail to keep things interesting without overwhelming her students.
Alison has taught knitting at Micheals, local yarn stores, community groups, and facilitated a variety of workshops She has also been part of a team that hosts yearly knitting retreats. She knit garments to be photographed for Sugar Bush Yarns pattern books. She has studied the role of knitting in communication, spirituality, and culture giving papers on the various roles of knitting at international academic conferences in Canada, Australia, Mexico, Finland, and England.
